Fireworks and Summer Fun

Now that summer has officially returned, there are lots of fun and engaging events for the family. From swimming to biking to hiking, summer opens up many possibilities for fun, sun-filled days. With the Fourth of July quickly approaching, we have possibly one of the most iconic ways to blast open the summer season: fireworks.

New York State legalized certain types of fireworks a number of years ago—delighting many and dismaying many dog owners. However you feel about the issue, it’s important to know the safety behind any festivities involving a foray into fireworks.

Even with fireworks lined up on the shelves of local stores, some suggest to leave the fireworks displays to the professionals in the interest of safety. Thankfully for us, we have the annual Cortland County Independence Day Spectacular on July 2 at the Dwyer Memorial Park in Preble. The event will feature local food vendors, live music, and family fun.

If you decide to bring fireworks home instead, here are some important safety tips to remember:

  • Kids should not play with fireworks. Always be sure they are kept at a safe distance from any fireworks, including firecrackers, rockets, and sparklers.

  • Be a vigilant consumer and be sure to only purchase legal fireworks and store them in a cool, dry place.

  • Never direct fireworks at another person, a home, brush, leaves, or any flammable substance.

  • Light one firework at a time.

  • Never attempt to relight a firework that doesn’t go off.

  • As the debris spreads across the area, don’t allow kids to collect or touch pieces of fireworks after the event. Some could still ignite.

  • Soak all fireworks in a bucket of water before disposing of them in the trash.

  • Don’t forget about your furry friends: keep pets inside and secured in case they get scared so they can’t run off or get hurt.

With so much summer fun ahead, be sure to keep everyone safe and happy during festivities. As always, be sure to check out the Hello Cortland events page for even more family fun.
